The Pestana Leisure Company that owns and maintains many golf courses, more than 80 hotels, and residential developments around the world knows what golfers expect from them and they deliver an unforgettable golfing experience to any guest visiting their golf courses. The Alto Golf is one of the five courses maintained by the group in the wonderful golf destination called the Algarve. The Alto Golf Course is without doubt one of the best courses in the region. Here are a few interesting facts you need to know about this course.

Last course designed by Sir Henry Cotton

People who have visited the Alto Golf Course would agree that though there are other courses, in the same area, this course is by far the most interesting and challenging to play on. The legendary course designer, Sir Henry Cotton, created this course and it was open to public in the year 1997. The course located in the picturesque countryside runs through two valleys and is best known for its modern and complex design. Interestingly, the Alto is the last golf course to be designed by the legendary course designer.

A course designed for everyone

When the responsibility of creating a course was handed over to Sir Henry Cotton the idea was to give the golfing community a championship class course. Sir Henry Cotton has delivered what was asked of him and more. He created a course that every golfer could enjoy. There is something for everyone at Alto Golf Course. The high handicappers would have a wonderful time at the course, we guarantee that. The average golfers too will enjoy their time on the course and the low handicappers – the players with experience and skill on their side – will have their golfing skills tested to the hilt.

Home to the Giant – 600-yard, par-5 hole

The Alto is 6100 meters long and is a par-72 course with 18-holes and some of the most challenging obstacles, bunkers, and water hazards. The highlight of the course is sixteenth hole that is one of the longest in the whole of Europe. Also known as The Giant, this hole is a par-5 and 600 yards long. Golfers who dare to conquer this monster of a hole with a birdie will be given a certificate and their name will find a place in the golf club’s honors board.

World class golf facilities

Golfers are advised to book tee times well in advance. Though the course is open for reservation throughout the year, due to its popularity and demand, it’s advisable to make bookings as early as possible. Guests get access to all the world class golfing facilities at the course. This includes dressing rooms, club house, café, bar and restaurants, pro shop, rental services, and practice facilities.
